If the weather is hot, let's cut the walk in half for today only. Let's hike on orange for 25 minutes one way.

Actually I liked the title of the hike so I made this up.

Our Sunken Meadow walk is a long time coming but on Sunday Aug 3rd it will come to fruition. Unfortunately in my first encounter this week with this park I only had the chance to walk the boardwalk so I didn’t get to explore the many trails that it offers, so we’ll be depending on our members who have knowledge of the park and its surroundings to guide us. I talked with a park official and he suggested getting to the park before 11pm on Sunday because the parking lot can get fairly crowded. The boardwalk is three quarters of a mile long. We can either walk it 4 times (2 miles) or walk it once and then take one of the trails that meander through the woods. We’ll talk it over when we meet to begin our walk. Admission to the park is $8. (Empire pass is now $59)

I moved to Kew Gardens about 40 years ago. I lived near Abingdon Road and Breevort Street.

Let's take a short walk once around yellow. Then we can walk down Abingdon Rd. I can show the group the Pagoda house that I lived in, a tree I planted when I was 13.

If the weather co-operates, we can eat at John's diner on Hillside Avenue. It was built from a real railroad car.

photoWalking Meetups > Nassau County Walking Meetup Group

This event is co-hosted by the Nassau County Brunch Friends Meetup Group. Members are invited to participate in the brunch, the walk, or both.

We will be meeting near the exterior (parking lot) entrance of Panera Bread, which is located on the east side of Broadway Mall, near Ikea. Join us for company and conversation, where we will discuss ideas for future group events--walking and non-walking--in and around Nassau County.

Following the brunch, we will make our way down to the gazebo in Kennedy Memorial Park / Foley Gardens (the park in front of the Empire Diner). It is requested that those who come for the walk make an effort to arrive at Panera Bread no later than 12:15, or else at the Foley Gardens gazebo no later than 1 p.m.

At shortly after 1 p.m., we will begin our 6 mile walk by setting off south from the gazebo, passing under the trestle of Hicksville Station and then taking a brief detour west to visit the horse farm on Duffy Avenue. Please note that we do tend to linger for a short while at the horse farm (and again, more briefly, at the Gregory Museum--see below). This event is a tad more casual than some of our more adventurous walks, although we do achieve a steadier continuity of pace during the later half of the journey.

From the horse farm, we will make our way first east, and then north, by way of the Hicksville Gregory Museum, before crossing through northwest Hicksville, and entering Cantiague Park, where we will wind up our journey with 1 1/2 miles of trail circumnavigating the soccer and baseball fields and picnic areas before returning to the Broadway Mall/Hicksville Station area to retrieve vehicles or pursue other modes of transportation. Restroom facilities are available in Cantiague Park at the end of our walk.

There is no raindate for this event. Should there be inclement weather, the brunch will occur at the same Panera Bread at 11 a.m., after which we will begin a walk within Broadway Mall at 1 p.m. For those interested, Broadway Mall also participates in the Town of Oyster Bay Free Co-Ed Mall Walking Program. More information can be found here:

Our July meetup took us up and down hills, and across a half dozen bridges, on the path from Little Neck to Plandome, revisiting a variation on the route we first journeyed in May of last year. Our August walk will be a recap of another of our popular 2007 events, taking is from Bellmore to Wantagh.

Beginning at Bellmore Station, in the Town of Hempstead, we will meet in front of the green and white Bellmore Railroad Shelter (maintained by the Historical Society of the Bellmores) across the street from the headquarters of Bellmore Fire District Hose Company #1.

From there, we will travel east through the Hamlet of Bellmore to Mill Pond County Park, where we will take to the trail along the shore of Mill Pond (identified as James Pond on some maps). Again traveling east, we will traverse the Hamlets of Wantagh and Seaford, passing the Seaford District #6 Schoolhouse (now home to the Seaford Historical Society Museum) along the way, before arriving at Tackapausha Preserve County Park.

Entering the Park at its southern end, we'll follow half a mile of trail north along Seaford Creek, before exiting into the Town of Oyster Bay. Then, after passing through the Hamlet of Massapequa, we'll enter Massapequa Preserve (identified as a state park on some maps), following trails east to the border of the Village of Massapequa Park, before winding up our walk along the bank of the Massapequa Reservoir.

After the walk, we will gather for a meal at the Massapequa Diner Restaurant across from the train station. (Restaurant may be updated once your organizer has had an opportunity to do a little local research. Please stay tuned.)

Parking is also available at Bellmore Station. Trains will be running every 30 minutes from Massapequa to Bellmore. For those coming from Penn Station, the 1:13 train arrives in Bellmore at 2:04.

The rain date for this walk, if canceled due to weather, is yet to be determined.
