Moderate 4 mile loop hike up Storm King Mountain.
The initial accent will be steep and rocky (with a little scrambling)
Great views of the Hudson River and the surrounding hill

NO Dogs

What to bring
Bring plenty of water, lunch/something to snack on, insect repellant, suntan lotion and anything else you need to enjoy the hike... tissues or bandaides. Hiking boots are recommended ... remember to dress in layers

Meeting point
As there are several pull outs and this location can only be reached from the south, please pay close attention to the directions:

Take Route 9W North for about 8.5 miles from the Bear Mountain bridge traffic circle, to the large parking area on the right. The parking is located where the road turns to the left, just after the top of the hill, there should be a blue parking area sign. There is a small gravel lot prior to this parking area this is NOT our meeting point.

NOTE: There is no access to this parking lot from the north (i.e. driving south on 9W). You will need to drive over the top of the hill on 9W (you will see your final destination a large parking lot on the left, just before you crest the hill) and continue driving south, turning around where you can. The best turn around point is probably Route 218.

New York City Safari I - South Street Seaport Beach Party

Friday, July 11 at 11 a.m.

photoNY Outdoor Fitness & Fun Group

Gigi will lead us on a New York City Safari, where we shall start at the West 83rd Street/Riverside Park entrance and venture on an 8-mile trek down the West side to Lower Manhattan, to the NEW Beach at South Street Seaport, Pier 17.

Although no swimming...
Sneakers, shorts, SUNBLOCK + 2-bottles-WATER, and comfortable beach attire required.

Food, Ping Pong, Skeet Ball and other games + Happy Hour at the NEW South Street Seaport Beach, Pier 17. Schedule at least five hours of fun!!!

The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party isn’t the only late-breaking summer-fun news — Community Board 1 has approved Water Taxi Beach for booze at its South Street Seaport location (at Pier 17) and official word is, the 18,000-square-foot beach will open on Memorial Day weekend (the Governors Island location will open July 4). According to the press release that just landed in our hot little hands, “Food and beverages will be available at a fish shack that will serve fish and chips, steamers, clams, and daily specials. Recreational opportunities will include a nine-hole miniature golf course, Ping-Pong tables and Skee-Ball.” Free table tennis? YES! No need to join that new $600-a-year Ping-Pong club. Plus, live music Thursday through Saturday nights, and an evening shuttle between Fulton Ferry Landing and the two new locations. Something tells us the Hamptons are going to be even over-er this year. LOL

Sugarloaf Hill and Castle Rock Hike

Saturday, July 26 at 11 a.m.

photoNY Outdoor Fitness & Fun Group

Sugarloaf Hill and Castle Rock
Garrison, New York
Hiking distance: 6.65 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Elevation Gain: 725 feet

Hike is 3 hours
Bring 2 bottles of Water, Lunch/Snacks
Hiking Boots or Shoes are highly recommended

We will be starting the hike from the Garrison Train Station.
Meetup at the South end of the parking lot and start the hike by 11:15 AM.

METRO NORTH: Hudson line to the Garrison Train station

By Car take the Saw mill Pkwy north to Taconic State Pkwy North.
Taconic Pkwy North exit at Bear Mountain Pkwy, US route 202/NY 35 west toward Peekskill.
Travel West on 202/35 to Bear Mountain PKWY west and then right turn onto US route 9.
Proceed North on route 9 to a left turn onto NY route 403.
Continue North on route 403 across US route 9D.
Entrance to the Garrison Train Station parking lot is a quarter mile on the left.

Sugarloaf Hill is in fact a ridge, running northeast and southwest, close to the east shore of the Hudson. The peak of Castle Rock lies off the northeast end of the ridge, while NY 9D runs along the west side. A small stream runs along the southeast side and flows into the Hudson, while to the northwest, the ground declines gently to the Hudson.

The hill is about 760 feet (230 m) high at its summit, towards the middle of the ridge. A red-blazed trail climbs its western side, and then runs along the ridge, across the summit, to end at a viewpoint over the Hudson of about 700 feet (210 m) elevation.[2]

Flora
Somewhat unusually, Opuntia humifusa, prickly-pear cactus, can be found growing on ledges atop Sugarloaf. The oceanic warmth brought upstream by the estuarine Hudson and the sunny, exposed rock allows this cactus to grow on the hill, and elsewhere in the Hudson Higlands.

History
Beverley, the house of Col. Beverley Robinson, was built at the foot of the peak in 1758. Robinson, a Tory, lost his house and estates there to confiscation in 1777. It was used as a headquarters by several American generals during the Revolution, and Benedict Arnold chose to dwell there when he took command of West Point in 1780. It was at Beverley that Arnold learned of the capture of John André and the failure of his treason, and fled thence to HMS Vulture.

Beverley later passed into the hands of Hamilton Fish, and was destroyed by a fire in 1892. The hill was donated by the Osborn family to the Taconic State Park Commission in 1974, and now forms part of the Osborn Preserve of Hudson Highlands State Park.
